16. Beyond Scully

A piece that lives inside darkness and only lets you see what it wants you to see.

Everything here is withheld, revealed in fragments, like catching details through a window at night.

A neon arrow pointing somewhere you can't follow. Chrome curves reflecting a room that isn't there. A sign facing the wrong direction in a composition that doesn't have a right one. A silhouette that might be a figure or might be a shadow of something else entirely. Script lettering dissolving into black before it finishes the word.

The montage doesn't layer the way the other works layer, it submerges. Fragments surface from the black the way objects surface in a darkroom tray: slowly, partially, never quite all the way. The dark isn't background. It's the dominant material. The images are interruptions in it.

On Chromaluxe metal at 24x36 inches, the blacks become the piece's deepest trick. The substrate gives them a density that paper can't touch, not flat, not matte, but dimensional. The dark has actual depth. The fragments that break through it gain the presence of things seen by accident in low light.
