Downtown Los Angeles exists here only as raw material: photographic source broken down and reconstituted as an abstract painted surface.
The work operates at the precise threshold where photographic content dissolves into painterly abstraction.
The Commodore Apartments, Bunker Hill's geometry, mechanical spirals and traffic infrastructure are stripped of context and reassigned roles as compositional elements: line, mass, negative space, tonal shift. The viewer toggles between recognizing a building and seeing a shape, between reading a sign and registering a mark. That oscillation is the work's subject.
At 40x60 inches, it's the largest piece in the collection and the one that makes the clearest case for photography as a medium capable of doing what painting has always claimed as its own.
